Prolimit Mercury Steamer with Natureprene – tried and tested

During the winter months we were able to test the new Prolimit Mercury Steamer Hooded 6/4 mm. It is the first suit without neoprene!

Natureprene is a bio-based rubber obtained from FSC-certified rubber trees. It is designed to offer the same stretch, warmth, insulation and durability as conventional suits without compromising on cost. Oyster shell powder and soya oil are even used in the production of the Prolimit Mercury.

Until now, carbon black has been a major component in the production of neoprene. Prolimits environmentally friendly carbon black is made from recycled car tyres, which are shredded and converted into carbon black powder. In contrast to conventional methods, this process reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 200 g per wetsuit.

All suits are laminated with aqua-α, a water-based adhesive. Unlike conventional adhesives, this water-based adhesive is solvent-free and chemical-free, removing 99% of contaminants. This process helps to avoid latex allergies.

The Prolimit suits are PAH-free and 100% REACH compliant. Being REACH compliant means avoiding the use of plasticiser oils in the neoprene layers. REACH is an EU regulation that aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment from risks associated with chemicals used in production processes.

On the water

We have been using the Prolimit Meccury since January. We have not yet noticed any difference to a conventional suit. The Mercury is very flexible and doesn’t feel like a 6-piece suit at all. The bonnet goes over the chin and protects well against the ingress of water. Also included are removable extra Velcro fasteners for the legs. This prevents the legs from being rolled up. There is also a pocket for a key on the leg.

What we can’t quite understand is why Prolimit doesn’t offer a 6/5 instead of a 6/4. The material is so flexible that you would hardly feel the difference. Apart from that, the suit has got us through the winter well so far.
