The wingfoil tack is the second basic maneuver you should learn. When tacking, you change direction by going through the wind with your chest or the tip of your board, i.e. the wind comes from the front for a short time during the maneuver.
To initiate this wingfoil maneuver, it is important that you pick up speed and enter the turn at speed. All in all, the maneuver has to be very quick. After all, you are riding (briefly) into the wind, which means you will lose speed quickly. The foil can then dive in quickly and you land with the board.
Here are the individual steps for the tack:
- Pick up speed & get going
- Take the bend quickly against the wind
- Take the wing over your head
- Re-gripping (back hand to the front, front hand to the back)
- Allow to fall off
As with the jibe, it is also possible to change feet before or after the turn. Accordingly, you ride (briefly) “switch-foot” before or after the turn. You can read how the foot change works here.
