Wingfoil Spot Ketelmeer, Schokkerhaven, Netherlands

Few water sports enthusiasts are likely to have heard of the Ketelmeer, which is directly adjacent to the Ijsselmeer, but Schokkerhaven (click HERE for Google Maps) is a great wingfoil spot.

Like many “lakes” in the Netherlands, the Ketelmeer was created by the separation of the former Zuiderzee from the North Sea and the subsequent polderisation. It lies south-east of the IJsselmeer between the Nooroostpolder in the north and Flevoland in the south. The only known wingfoil spot on the Ketelmeer is in the north at Schokkerhaven.

Right next to the marina, a sandy beach has been specially created for bathers and water sports enthusiasts, which is protected by two piers. The complete infrastructure is available here: free parking with no height restrictions, a meadow for setting up, toilets and a café/restaurant. There is even a mobile wingfoil school here.

Wind direction and conditions

The spot is ideally located for winds from the west to south-west. This is also the prevailing wind direction in the region, meaning that the spot is statistically always well ventilated. Due to the sheltered location of the Ketelmeer, the conditions are never too extreme, so that wingfoil beginners and intermediates as well as freestylers will have fun.

The two piers that frame the beach ensure that the water in this area is almost as smooth as glass. Absolute laboratory conditions prevail here and invite you to hone your jibing technique. Although the piers take a little of the wind away, once you’re on the foil this doesn’t bother you. The small basin is also ideal for beginners. Free of any waves, you can concentrate solely on the wing when you get on the wobbly board.

Entry

Access is via the sandy beach. You then have to push your equipment about 20 metres to the end of the bathing area; you are not allowed on the board before then. The bathing area is separated from the rest of the spot by buoys and a line. From here it only gets deep enough for foiling anyway.

To ensure that the spot remains open for a long time to come and that this “new discovery” is not immediately closed down again, we would like to remind you of a few rules of behaviour. Park in the designated areas and not across several parking spaces. Staying overnight in a campervan or bus is prohibited. Watch out for bathers. Go onto the water with a smile and be nice and friendly to your fellow human beings.

Dangers

Further out, commercial vessels pass by regularly. They have right of way and are stronger than you anyway. Keep away from them.

Just before the beach, a chain of buoys separates the bathing area from the rest of the spot. Driving in there at full speed is not a good idea.

Keep a certain distance from the piers. Large stones are not good for you or your equipment.
