Spot report from the estuary of the Rio Mira
A guest post by Eike aka 3asylife / Category: Spotfinder & Travel
An underrated jewel on Portugal’s Atlantic coast
Vila Nova de Milfontes is no longer an insider tip in the hiking community – it is one of the most beautiful stages of the fishing trail on the Alentejo coast. It is only a matter of time before this charming place becomes a hotspot for wingfoilers too. After all, once you’ve foiled here, you’ll be back.
After a tour along the Atlantic coast from Tarifa, Milfontes was the first stop north of the Algarve – and set the bar high. Why? Read for yourself.
Wind & weather: Nortada at its finest
From May to September, the Nortada determines the weather on Portugal’s west coast – a thermal north wind that reliably sets in from around 1 p.m. in sunny weather and blows at 15 to 25 knots into the evening.
In Vila Nova de Milfontes, this ensures ideal conditions:
- Side-onshore wind from the right (from the northwest)
- Pleasant temperatures above 20 °C even in late spring
- Clear session structure: chill in the morning, shoot in the afternoon
When it’s calm or in the morning, it’s worth taking a trip to the protected estuary of the Rio Mira – ideal for SUPing, swimming or hiking.
💡 Tip: If the wind comes from the southwest, rain is not far away – but this rarely happens in summer.
The spot: Wave power & flat water in one
Two worlds, one spot – this is exactly what makes Milfontes so exciting for wingfoilers of all skill levels.

🌊
Outdoor area (wave):
- Long running waves between 1-3 meters
- Well sorted for maneuvers and wave rides
- Best conditions for advanced skiers & freestylers
🏞️
Inner area (river mouth):
- Shallow water with sufficient depth for starting
- Perfect for beginners or technical training
- Less constant in the wind due to surrounding buildings – but easy to control
Whether downwind runs, turns in the waves or first attempts at flying – this spot can do it all.
